COMBINED NOTICE OF NOMINATION AND ELECTION

Iron Workers Local # 5

Due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic as well as recent pronouncements from the Centers for Disease Control and Protection, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Labor, state governments, as well as the federal government, in person elections of Local Union officers is not recommended and may not even be allowed. This does not mean that the present terms of office are automatically extended. Instead, the General Executive Board and the General Executive Council has authorized and is requiring mail ballot elections to ensure union democracy while protecting the safety of the membership, staff, and Local Union officers.  This applies to all Local Union elections scheduled to take place prior to June 30, 2020.

Pursuant to Article V, Section 7b, the International Constitution is hereby amended on an interim basis to meet the emergency demands presently required by the Coronavirus. Any inconsistent provisions found in the provisions pertaining to the election of Local Union officers in Article XXVI and in Appendix B to the Constitution are modified on an interim basis to reflect the requirement to run mail ballot elections and nominations as set forth herein. All remaining provisions in the Article XXVI and Appendix B are still in effect and must be followed.

The following positions are up for nomination and election:

  • PRESIDENT
  • VICE PRESIDENT
  • FINANCIAL SECRETARY-TREASURER / BUSINESS MANAGER
  • RECORDING SECRETARY
  • SERGEANT-AT-ARMS
  • CONDUCTOR
  • 3 TRUSTEES
  • 5 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS
  • 3 EXAMINING COMMITTEE MEMBERS
  • Delegate to the District Council

NOMINATIONS MAY BE MADE BY MAIL, EMAIL, OR TEXT MESSAGE.
Nominations are now open (effective April 7, 2020) and will remain open until 11:59 P.M. April 23, 2020.  Nominations must be received by or before April 24, 2020 at 11:59 pm.  Nominations may be made by any of the following methods:

  • Email the name of the nominee(s) and position(s) for which you are nominating them to the Judges of Election at iw05election2020@gmail.com.
  • Text the name of the nominee(s) and position(s) for which you are nominating them to the Judges of Election at 443-962-2596
  • Mail the name of the nominee(s) and position(s) for which you are nominating them to “Judges of Election” at Local 5 Elections, P.O. Box 6500, Largo, MD 20792.

The nomination must identify who is making the nomination so you must put your first and last name on your nomination for it to be effective.  Nominations are not required to be seconded, but each nominee must accept their nomination. The Judges of Election will contact prospective nominees to verify their acceptance.  Acceptances may be by phone, text, email or mail.  Acceptances must be received by 11:59 pm on April 24, 2020 to be effective.  You must be a member in continuous good standing for 24 months and meet the other eligibility requirements in the International Constitution to accept a nomination.

MAIL BALLOT ELECTION
If, upon closing of nominations and verification of eligibility, there remains contested offices, an election will take place by mail. Candidates will receive further information regarding the election process prior to the ballots being mailed.  Once the eligibility of the candidates is determined by the General Secretary, the mail ballot election will proceed.

BALLOTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 11, 2020
All members will be mailed a ballot and voting instructions by or before May 21, 2020. To be counted, all ballots must be received at the P.O. Box established by the Judges of Election no later than 4:00 pm on June 10, 2020.  The mail ballot package will include a stamped return envelope addressed to the PO Box used for the election.  The voting instructions will explain the process for voting and mailing the ballot in the return envelope.  To be eligible to vote, a member must be in good standing on Election Day, June 11, 2020.

Election Day will take place on June 11, 2020 at Iron Workers Local #5, 9301 Peppercorn Place, Largo, MD 20774.  The Judges of Election will pick up the ballots at the Post Office and bring them to the local union.  The votes will be tallied on Election Day, June 11, 2020, and the results will be published that day as well.

Please be advised:

  • The Union meetings scheduled for Thursday April 9, 2020 and Thursday May 14, 2020 have been canceled. The current resolutions on the floor will be read for the third time and voted on at the June 11, 2020 union meeting.
  • The rest of the 2020 Spring Apprentice classes are canceled.
